Question:

First Time Abroad - 6 Days in Dublin. A Few Questions...?

by  |  earlier

My hubby and I are planning our first trip abroad from the US to Dublin (late May 2008):

1. What is a good tour to Newgrange from Dublin?

2. How much do taxi's cost?

3. What is a good romantic restaurant in Dublin area (avail. by public transport)?

4. What should we see LAST to make our final memory before heading home?

5. We're considering staying at Clontarf or Fitzpatrick Castle hotel, but are concerned about the commute to the city via public transport. Any ideas or thoughts on this?

6. What is the fastest/easiest way to get around the city?

Thank you. Also anything else about the city that you might think useful, feel free to post.

  1. 1: Newgrange tours are available on www.bordfailte.ie or www.discoverireland.com

2: taxis are very expensive and average about 10 euro for a 3 mile journey.. the meter starts at 4.10 and pray you don't get stuck in traffic

3: Luigi Malones (temple bar) Little Cesars (dame street) are good, and lots of buses pass by because it's right in the centre of the city

4:maybe see the book of Kells in Trinity College or Christ church or st.Patricks cathedral..or go on the guinness tour or something...

5:Clontarf castle is much more accessible to town (city centre) plenty of buses pass by and I think the dart ( surburban rail network) is close by too...

6: Buses are the handiest way to get around, if you want to see the coast, take the dart and you can get on the Luas (tram) which stops at most of the museums and heritage sites

hope this helps, enjoy your stay

  2. woooow, DUBLIN DUBLIN!!!, were a rowdy bunch!, only joking, im form Dublin!!

tour to newgrange??, im not aware of any, i would just get a coach!

i think taxis are more expensive then in the USA

to be honest im not very dood on all these qestions, there more touristy kinda questions that someone visiting ireland would be able to answer better, when you live here you kinda loose the tourist look on it!!

    sorry but have fun!!

  3. newgrange is a great tourist attraction, but a lot of people come home disappointed from it [its best to visit dec 21, but there's a really long waiting list]. it's far enough from the city, and there's no public transportation, so book it with a tour guide

taxis are cheap enough, since outside dublin country was put on the meter [expect to pay 20c per km, during the night, it gets more expensive]

about romantic restaurants, i don't really know to be honest, but EATZEN in ashbourne [just outside dublin, 20-odd mins by bus, the no. 103] is supposed to be great [from reviews ive seen in magazines. i've never been in it. too far from where i live]. it's quite pricy though, but people commute to it from all over dublin, so it must be worth it.

try getting the dart [green train] out to bray. it's a seaside resort, but it's a lovely town. get a fish'n'chips in casson's. they're famous for it.

i've never stayed in either, sorry

easiest is taxi or the luas trams. fastest would be buses, but they sometimes don't run on schedule when there's a lot of traffic. in the city itself, there are these cool pedal taxis on o connell street. they're fun, but they won't go too far

don't forget to visit kilmainham gaol, or the museum on kildare st. they're very interesting, and a part of irish history. enjoy your stay!!

  4. Dublin is a great city, just ask anyone for help when you get there. But, instead of staying in Dublin, why not spend a day or two travelling the country?

The Real Ireland is portrayed as magnificent castles, breathtaking landscapes, historic castles etc etc but Dublin does not supply all that.

Go drive Ireland by width, its only about 4 hours to get from one end to the other.

Real scenery can be found in Co Kerry. Drive the Ring of Kerry, visit Dingle, Tralee, Connors Pass. Get to know the different varieties of people. Dublin is not the only type of Irish there is.
