First World Cup winner Uruguay has the potential to create big upsets
World Cup nothing is for sure. Top teams can go out early and the teams that the bookmakers gave no chance to can create big upsets. Long shot guest that no one expected to win. Between 1990 and 2002, we saw Turkey, Cameroon or Croatia play that role. Uruguay has the potential to do it in this years world cup in South Africa.
URUGUAY:
Uruguay has a special place in World Cup History. It won two World Cups, including the first one ever, in 1930 and 1950. It has been 40 years since that Uruguay has played a big role in the competition. Since its semi final in Mexico 1970, the Celeste has been intermittently in and out the World Cup. It did miss 3 of the last 4 World Cups and during its latest one, in 2002, did not win one game. Their qualification campaign was mediocre in which they finished 5th and had to play Costa Rica in a home and away playoff game. With only one friendly game before the World Cup, Oscar Tabarez is keeping his cards hidden before the World Cup. With at best an average defense, Uruguay has an offensive firepower that should not be taken lightly.
The Diego Forlan - Luis Suarez duo is potentially one of the competition's most dangerous duo. Both are coming off excellent seasons with their respective clubs, Forlan with Atletico Madrid and Suarez with Ajax. Add to that Sebastian Abreu who is luxurious joker waiting on the bench. Outside an undeniable talent with the 3 strikers, Uruguay is also a very opportunistic team that makes the team extremely dangerous as it can capitalize on its opponents' mistakes. Losing the ball in your half is not a good idea, Uruguay has shown a quick reaction to counter attack.
Their defense is not famously known to be made of steel. Oscar Tabarez has chosen to go with 3 central defenders, leaving space and creativity to his wingers that mix the role of midfield players and backs. Maximiliano Pereira and Alvaro Pereira love to bring the danger from their respective wings and they do it extremely well. A good start to stop the Celeste would be to block the Pereira duo.
