I turned 13 about 2 months ago. I am going on my first airplane ride but without my family- just my dance group.

i kinda get along with them but I just felt so weird trying to be good friends with them. I like being nice quiet and having serenity. They're boy CRAZY, loud, and i dont kno...just hyper. Maybe I will be that one day but it just annoys me now... (Im the weird one in this situation- sry i think i made them sound worse than they are- they are nice- but idk, w/e....)

idk what to pack, what to do on the ride, im really afraid of heights.... any tips at all would be great...

i only described the people im with to show im not flying solo, but it will feel lik it... (they lik me tho...)

  1. It seems mostly you are nervous about being in a new situation. Your family won't be there, but you will be with people you don't really know and you have not found where you fit in yet. You are very lucky! Being on a plane with a group of people you are unfamiliar with is a great way to learn about each other. It can also help you pass the time and distract you from the flight. If you have music you enjoy, bring it. It might sound odd, but if you are a reader, DON'T bring a book. There will be better opportunities to interact if you don't. If there is a lull, the airplane will have a catalog and maybe a flight magazine on board. You don't say how long you will be in flight, but I am assuming it is a domestic flight. Anything liquid has to be in its own 3 ounce container, and they have to be in a one quart plastic zip lock bag. So, if you have any cosmetics, check them in your luggage. your checked bag can weigh up to 50 pounds. Try to pack light. If you bring a computer or electronics, pack them in a carry on, with an extra set of casual clothes.( in case your luggage gets lost) Bring a few extra dollars for box lunches the flight will offer if you are in the air a long time. Ask the counter person at your gate if you can purchase water to carry on after you pass security. some allow it, some don't.

As far as being afraid of heights goes, many people find that once in the air, they are so removed from the earth the fear goes away. They might still be nervous climbing a ladder, but are very comfortable in the air. DO NOT tell your group you are afraid of heights. Kids have a way of creating problems for others if they know a weak spot. you will be much more comfortable without being teased for something you might actually have no problem with otherwise.

Bring some gum for the pressure changes on take off and landing. If you forget, and your ears start to feel clogged, you can hold you nose and GENTLY blow until your ears equalize the pressure. If you are thirsty ask for water. you can dehydrate very quickly in flight. Wear comfortable loose shoes or full sandals, your feet might swell in flight. You can take your shoes off too, but do NOT got to the bathroom barefoot. You are going to have a great time!

  2. Bring an mp3 player or DVD player...something.

And don't worry about flying. I first got on a plane at around your age. Being a little nervous, my cousin said just pretend your on a big bus. Honestly, that worked for me. It's really not scary...you'll see, and air travel is actually safer than driving. Bring some bubble gum with you too. This will help when your ears pop because of the altitude. Here's a link to explain that:

All in all, don't worry about it, focus on relaxing during the flight. I usually just go to sleep.

Cool... Go do your dance!   :-)

  3. Depending on how long is the flight, you just may want to sleep through it.  Try to get an aisles seat - it helps to easily walk around during the long flight.

Bring puzzles, ipods, books.  And remember to relax.  It is the safest form of transportation.

    good Luck...

  4. Lots of web sites will help you with what to pack and what not to.  Avoid hair sprays and perfumes.  Many airports are still cracking down hard on liquids.  Avoid any metal makeup boxes that the x-ray machine can't see through.

Sit in the aisle seat for the fear of heights problem

Request a headset to listen to the in flight movie or music (or bring a portable media player like an ipod with you for distraction)

Remember that as rowdy as they may be that behavior will not be acceptable on an aircraft and the flight crew will keep them in check.

Also, as the other post suggested you may try sleeping.  You may find that you get air sick and sleeping will make that more bearable (as will a warm towel provided by a flight attendant)

  5. I suggest not setting by the window seeing how afraid of heights what I would do is watch movies/tv shows on my ipod that should make time go bye quickly

  6. Wow, yer first airplane ride! My first was scary too, but hey, I was on my way to bootcamp, so I had other things on my mind.........

Anyhoo, you can use your mp3 player if you want to tune out your 'friends', (or put them in your ears but don't turn it on if you want people to only think your listening). Have you ever gone on bus trips? Well a plane is a lot like a bus, even more so if you have loud friends surrounding you.  Don't take too much in your carry on bag, go to the airlines web site to get the rules on what you are aloud to take on the plane. Speaking of this, you will go through a security gate. You will have to take off your shoes, everyone does, and put your shoes, purse, carryon bag, all into a container. the container will go through an x-ray box, while you at the same time walk through a metal detector, and you will be asked to put your change, watch, any thing else metal into a little box so you don't set off the metal detector. Be prepared for this part and it will go smoother.  Once you find your seat, pay attention to what the flight attendent says at the beginning (the exits are here and there, the bathrooms are here....etc) most seasoned travelers ignore this, but listening to it will give you piece of mind and a mental control over the matter. I would go pee before you get on the plane, cause those bathrooms on there are teeeeeny! AND a real hassle if you have to climb over people to get to it. Now time for take off, my favorite part! It's like being in a race car. Its kind of a rush! Now I feel better when I am able to look out the window and see the world go by. The reason is so I don't get motion sickness. If you can see the horizon or clouds going by, then your brain understands the movement of the plane, and therefore less sickness. If you are worried about that, you can take an over the counter motion sickness medication, the dose appropriate for your age, but these can make you sleepy and/or thirsty.  Once the plane levels off, it is usually smooth, sometimes the plane shakes but this is natural, nothing to fear. Take some things along to keep you busy, puzzle books, a novel, video game, but if you forget there is usually a "sky mall" magazine to look through in the seat pocket in front of you. (cool but expensive stuff in it!). Set yourself appart from your friends by being a nice young lady to the flight attendent too, they really deserve it, they work hard. Once the plane lands, don't rush to get up and get your stuff, the flight attendents will tell you to wait, and will tell you when it is ok. Then once you do everyone will be rushing to get out, I always just wait a while, it's easier than pushing past the crowd. The attendants in the airport also the adults flying with you will help you to get to your checked baggage, which you WILL fill out a tag properly and tie onto your bag when you get to the airport, they provide little tags at the checkin counter. Put a giant ribbon or something else to make your suitcase stand out.  Don't overpack your bag in case it is inspected. Again check out the airlines website for info on what not to take. I could go on and on but just remember you will do fine, it's just like a bus ride (except it flies), it's the safest way to travel, and hey, email me once your back to let me know how the flight did!  D
