First apartment...any advice?

I'm a 20 year old college student and I'm gonna be moving into my first apartment soon. I'm excited about having my own crib but I know it's a big step with a lot to do and things to know. Any advice?

Pay all of your bills on time!  Damage done to your credit now may not seem like a big deal, but it will follow you for many many years, so get yourself started out on the right foot.  Enjoy your new place!

Make sure you read the entire lease agreement before signing anything. Depending on where the place is and who the landlord is, they could throw something sneaky in there (more likely to happen if its not an apartment complex/community) Also, I'd say do a good walk-through first to see if anything is damaged before you move in so they can't blame you for it later. Most importantly remember to save what you can!  

Compile a budget, determine what you have left over after all your bills and necessities are paid for and then save at least 1/2 of what is left, to ensure that you have a nest egg if something was to happen or you wanted to upgrade to something bigger or better later.  

Also, make sure you pay everything on time - don't start a bad habit now that could ruin your credit long-term.  You can't do anything now a days without good credit!

Make sure you have a lease and read it thoroughly.

Know that you cannot withhold rent if things need to be fixed.  For some reason, everyone thinks that you can, but if you do you will get evicted for non-payment - just a common misconception that you should know about.

Just be a good tenant and pay your rent in full and on time and you should be fine!
