My baby is 4 months and I hear it's a good time to start the baby signing so that they can start to recognize it. What words do you think are good to start with? I think "eat" is a good one. what do you think.

  1. I think that's a great idea and eat is a good choice.  My sons first sign was "more, please", he started using sign language when he was around 9-10 months old.

  2. i made up 1 sign and used another real one.

    hungry (rubs belly) and eat

teach whatever your baby needs. mine was always hungry but i didn't start any sign language until he was 1. theres a book that is really good, but i dont remember the name of it.

  3. Eat, more, please, bottle & water are good starters. I sign the alphabet to my daughter sometimes. She is 4 1/2 months old. There are many good DVDs out there that are child oriented for sign language. Baby Einstein has one although I do not like it as much as others. You just have to search around. I forgot the name of a really good one. If I can find it or remember it I'll let you know.

EDIT: Go to amazon.com and type in baby sign language DVD. It comes up with 4 pages worth. You can probably find some of those titles & more in a local library.  My daughter loved watching it.

EDIT again: Do a google search. There are sites that will teach you words. And I'm sure youtube has stuff on there.

  4. Go to a local Wal-Mart & get the First Signs DVD. It was really helpful for me & my Son (now 3) when we learned the signs. We used eat, drink, more, hungry, ect. I also have the book from the ASL to get even more words like store, garage, park, ect.  Good Luck

  5. When they few days old, they already know how. Putting their hand in their mouth means hungry. When their hands are relaxed means satisfied. try teaching him the word sleepy.

  6. Whatever you can use often will work for you.  I started my son with "book" and "dog" because we have been reading everyday since he was about 4 months and we have three dogs.  Every time we read I give him the sign, point and say the word 3-10 times.  Throughout the day I point out the dogs and do that sign with him.  We have been doing this for about 6 weeks now.  He is very attentive when we are giving him the signs, though I am not expecting him to sign for many more months to come.

So, since "eat" is something you do often, it should work well.  Try to indroduce words slowly, for your own benefit, so you don't forget the older words and stop doing those signs.

  7. My sister's little girl has DS and her first signs were drink, eat, more, all done, and of course, NO!  She also now knows things, like bath, kitty, etc.
