  1. Get something from around 1990-1995. Thats when all the best sports cars were made and now they are dirt cheap because of age.

A Nissan 300ZX would be my first choice. In naturally aspirated trim (likely what $5000 will get you stuck with) they make 222hp from 3 liters of the first ever mass produced Japanese V6 engine. Twin turbo gets you an extra 78hp taking it up to 300hp but requires premium fuel.

A Nissan 240SX would be my second choice since while it doesn't have as much power it does have a reputation for being great at handling (especially in the drift world). Power comes from a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter inline 4 putting out 155hp.

Beyond that I'd take any 80s Camaro (and put a 350 in it), MKIII Toyota Supra (only 200hp turbo but they can make 300hp with just a modified exhaust) or similar cars.

  2. Look for small Japanese cars from the early-mid nineties.

Examples:  Honda Civic/Prelude, Toyota Corolla/Celica, Mazda Protégè/Miata, Subaru Impreza, Nissan Sentra, etc.  Also, if you want something a little more unique you could try to find a Saab 900 (very good cars if you keep them up on their maintenance) or a 1980s diesel Mercedes-Benz (only the diesels though; they're more reliable and get excellent fuel economy).  The old Benzes run forever (my dad has one with 150K on it and it's never had any problems) and are still very safe by today's standards.  On top of that, you get those classic, German good looks.

  3. for that money i like the nissan sentra b/c you can get tehm with under 75K for under 5K.  2001-2003's if you look.

  4. With $5k as your budget go get a third gen camaro they look good and are slowly becoming harder to find. You can pick a great one up for around $2k and then spend the rest in bolt ons like a procharger.

I have around 550rwhp N/A on my IROCZ  but I also spent twice as much as you want to.

  5. i've worked on alot of cars and i would suggest a honda or toyota. they are always in good condition no matter how many miles. honda civics are great first cars.

  6. Well I know you probably think I'm crazy, but I would go for either a VW Jetta or a Dodge Neon SXT. Im 16 and I bought a 1998 Jetta as my first car. Now mine is a 2.0L which is terribly slow, so maybe look for a GLX or VR6, the 6 cylinders. They are very fast cars and they have great reliablitly. I paid $3500 for my jetta, so thats in your budget. Also, my mother has a 2002 Dodge Neon SXT. I love this car to death! It had some minor problems but nothing too big. This car has 132 hp, I know it doesnt sound like much, but this thing can fly. I find that I can go somewhere from 0-60 in under 7 seconds. I think thats pretty good for a NEON. You can find neons for cheap everywhere if you cant find the newer bodies 2000+ you always have the older ones. I love these cars. They both have wings, sunroofs, and power everything. The Neon has an AMAZING i mean AMAZING sound system in it, maybe because its an SXT, I dont know. But the jetta is very stylish too. Have fun picking a new car!
