  1. The Toyota Prius has the best fuel economy of all cars offered in the US, at 46mpg combined, 48mpg city/45mpg highway.

If you are being given a car, I wouldn't complain.  Since you can't see the outside of the car while you are inside it, what does it matter what it looks like/if it's ugly, if it gets you from place to place?

If you are looking at the Nissan Altima, you may like the Nissan Altima Hybrid (very powerful and better fuel economy than the gasoline-only Altima).  Depending on trim line, the Nissan Altima on the same EPA test cycle gets:

    hybrid: 34mpg combined, 34mpg city/33mpg highway

    4cyl: 26mpg combined, 23mpg city/32mpg highway

6cyl: 22mpg combined, 19mpg city/26mpg highway (but this requires premium gasoline)

Again, the EPA fuel economy of the Honda Accord depends on trim line.  basically, though:

    4cyl: 24mpg combined, 21mpg city/31mpg highway

    6cyl: 22mpg combined, 19mpg city/28mpg highway

    Same for the Mazda 6:

    4cyl: 24mpg combined, 21mpg city/28mpg highway

    6cyl: 20mpg combined, 17mpg city/25mpg highway

(The 2009's haven't been tested yet.)

Don't forget to look into other costs involved with the car, besides just the cost of gas (based on their MPG), such as the insurance for each car, expected scheduled maintenance costs, reliability (chance of unexpected breakdown, and costs to repair), and the expected resale value for when you sell the car later (depreciation amounts).

The Toyota Prius receives Edmunds' Lowest True Cost to Own award in its market segment (sedan under $25,000), as does the Nissan Altima Hybrid (sedan under $30,000) and the Nissan Altima Coupe (coupe under $30,000): http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/tco/2008/...

The Toyota Prius, Nissan Altima, and Honda Accord are on Consumer Report's Best of the Best used car list (for reliability):

    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/...

And on Consumer Reports best new cars lists, the Toyota Prius is top Green Car, and the Nissan Altima is top Family Sedan.

    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/...

And the Toyota Prius is also on Edmunds' top used car best bets list, too:  http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/bestbet/a...

  2. Altima's 4 cyl is a very good engine and gets 25 combined mpg, the 6 cyl 23.

    the Honda Accord 4cyl is smooth & gets 23 the V6 21.

    the mazda 6 4cyl 25  , the V6 20

the Toyota Prius is a hybrid and gets 44 mpg.
