  2. The very first country to cross the canal was France.

  3. The french. However, none of their tanks or heavy equipment had anything but reverse gears and they failed.

The French were the first to attempt a canal crossing Panama  in 1880.   France pulled out shortly after due to the extreme logistical issues involved.  In 1904 the French construction company convinced the US government to buy it out and finish the project.   The Panama Canal was finished a year ahead of schedule in 1914.
