First day highlights of Players Championship - Part 2
The third place on the leaderboard was occupied by Mark O’Meara and David Toms. The duo compiled a score of 66 to take a seat two strokes behind the leader.
O’Meara teed-off from the front and picked three birdies against one bogey to seal the front at 2-under par 34. On his way towards the back, the veteran produced a flawless scorecard. He picked four birdies without dropping a shot
and occupied a place next to Toms.
Meanwhile, Toms also chose to tee-off from the front and did a fantastic job by carding six birdies without a loss. In addition to that, the player finished first in driving distance, which proved his prowess on the long pars of the
TPC Sawgrass.
When asked to summarize his game, Toms said, “Really, the key to my round today besides the way I hit the ball off the tee and into the greens was probably my comeback putt on the first hole. I hit a drive right down the middle. Hit
what I thought was a perfect 9-iron for the perfect club and flew it about 40 feet past the hole on number 10. Hit my first putt about 8 or 10 feet by the hole, and just poured it right in the middle. That was just kind of the way the day went.”
A five-way tie was seen at the fifth place, which included world number two Martin Kaymer, world number five Graeme McDowell, world number 27 Alvaro Quiros, world number 46 Rory Sabbatini and Fredrik Jacobson.
Kaymer revived his magic on Thursday, as he stopped three strokes behind the leader. The German birdied four holes in the front and three at the back, which helped him impress the crowd with his superb driving.
The same could be said about McDowell, who gave a statement before coming to TPC that he had bid goodbye to poor form. The Northern Irishman has been losing his short game ever since he stepped into the new season. However, with the
onset of the Players Championship, the veteran picked four birdies and one eagle with the help of 78 percent success in Green Hits in Regulation.
A three-time winner on PGA Tour, McDowell swept the course with his exceptional chipping. While commenting on the change in his swings, McDowell told the press that his swing coach Pete Cowan accompanied him to Lake Nona to help him
out with his game. He also revealed that he was satisfied with the results.
