First day highlights of Players Championship - Part1
The 37th edition of the Players Championship is taking place at the Tournament Player Club (TCP) Sawgrass in Florida. The Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event is carrying a purse of $9.5-million and 600 FedEx
points. Here is a brief look at the first round and the players stats.
Cadillac Championship winner, Nick Watney compiled a score of 8-under-par, 64 in the first round of the tournament to take the reins of the fifth flagship event. The American reeled nine birdies, one eagle, one double-bogey and one
bogey.
The player attributed his success to his putting and said, “I think whenever I've shot a low round like that, you always make a few 15- or 20-footers that you don't make every day. The putter is just a great way to keep momentum if
you happen to hit a loose shot or gain it with the birdie putts.”
Watney was chased by Lucas Glover, who comes off a fresh win at the Wells Fargo Championship. The player roamed around the course with a superb short game and an accurate long game. He teed-off from the front and made his move starting
from the opening hole, which he birdied with ease. When asked to name his best shot of the day, Glover named the first birdie as his best.
“Best birdie? Number 1, just because it was the first hole and got things going,” he said.
The 31-year-old proceeded towards the next hole and netted one more to swing into momentum. With a gap of one green, Glover birdied one more and left rest of the holes for par.
However, standing on the ninth tee, the player smashed a tee shot, which traveled three yards and left him standing on the right side of the fairway bunker. The American analysed the distance and took out a 5-wood to take his second
shot. The club selection turned out to be perfect and Glover ended up making an eagle from 17 feet away.
Marching towards the back nine, Glover shared a long discussion with his caddie. The discussion seemed to have paid off, as the American birdied three more holes including the par-3, 17th. The crowd cheered as the player
hit a 3-wood onto the green to make a 21-foot long birdie.
Glover wrapped the day with the second lowest score of the day.
Speaking to reporters after the day's play, Glover stated, “ (I) Made sure I got some rest early in the week. Only played nine Wednesday, took Monday off. And just the confidence from last week from looking up and seeing the ball
where I'm looking instead of not, and that's been an issue. But it's just a confidence thing for me.”
