  1. Just take a notebook and pens. You probably won't need a backpack, you can take one of those fashionable large handbags.

If you need to take anything else, your lecturers will soon tell you.

  2. Ahh, first day of college! Congrats!

Now personally, as a current college student of 2 years, I've never had to bring a laptop to class. A simple pen and notebook for your classes will do (and any books the professor might ask you to bring in).

Believe it or not, most of the computer use is in the dorm, at least it was for me. And though you will see people using laptops in lecture, most people find it too hard or cumbersome and will resort back to the old-fashioned pen and notebook (which works great!)

So yes, best of luck and congrats! Enjoy yourself!!!

  3. Don't bother bringing anything other than pen and paper on the first day.  The first day is usually just to introduce you to the structure of the course and the professor, and to let you know what you'll need when the class really gets started.

And honestly, laptops in class don't work so well.  I tried it for a semester, and ended up going back to aa regular paper notebook, because I couldn't type fast enough to take good notes on the laptop (and I spend most of my day typing, so that's saying something).
