First day of surfing of 2012 ASP calendar delivers plenty of exciting action
The 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals calendar got off to a great start with the 5-day surfing festival that got underway at Jan Juc in Victoria, Australia, on Thursday, January 5, 2012.
While the competitions were scheduled to be held in Bell Beach, the three-foot waves on offer at Jan Juc convinced the event organisers to move the proceedings to the latter site in order to take advantage of the promising conditions.
The very first day of surfing action on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) calendar kicked off with Round 1 of the Championship Moves Pro Junior. The day later moved on to the first round of the ASP 1-Star Championship Moves Open and EVO Women’s Pro Junior.
The first event of the ASP Pro Junior Series saw Australia’s Joe Van Dijk prove wiser beyond his years to clinch top honours in his Round 1 four-man heat to advance through into the next round to face his next challenge in the form of his compatriot Tim Macdonald, Chris Robertson and Will Coy.
Talking about his impressive victory in the opening round of Championship Moves Pro Junior, the 13-year-old Van Dijk said, “I just tried to get a couple scores quickly and as many waves as I could. I wasn't planning on going in this event, but I got offered a spot and made the last minute decision to give it a go.”
The opening round of the inaugural ASP 1-Star Championship Moves Open saw Australia’s Matt Banting, who is competing in both the Championship Moves Open and Pro Junior, get off to an ideal start after emerging triumphant in his Round 1 heat.
“It's good to get out of that first heat,” said Banting. “I haven't surfed in a heat in about 2 months, since the ASP World Juniors in Brazil so it's good to get back into the competition side of things.”
The local talent Bronte Macaulay prevailed in her first heat of Evo Women’s Pro Junior by defeating her compatriots Kelly Andrew, Brinkley Frazer-Davi and Kelly Laity to secure her place in the second round of the competition.
Other stand-out performers of the day included Australia’s Soli Bailey, Philippa Anderson, Shane Holmes, Noa Deane and Sean Mawson.
The ASP 1-Star Champion Moves Open and Pro Junior will continue from January 5 through January 9, while Evo Women’s Pro Junior from run from January 5 through January 8.
