  1. I've certainly always been able to use mine, which is a Nationwide card and, as the previous post alluded to, they don't charge extortionate fees.  Check with your Bank before you go - you don't want to come back and find that you've paid over the odds because of large charges applied to each transaction.

  2. As long as it has either cirrus or maestro sign on it then yes there is normally no problem.  If you want to take money out of a cash machine most will change the language into English, ask your bank before you go about fees as you don't want to make loads of small withdrawals if you are going to be charged.

If you want to use your card to pay for goods or services be aware that you will be asked for photo ID.  This is normal in Spain (where you are meant to have some form of ID on you at all times).

Credit/Debit cards as not as widely used in Spain as they are in the UK or USA and very few places will give you cash back and some places do still charge if you use your card, but you can still use it.

Hope you have a good holiday

  3. Mine has always worked fine. If you have a maestro or cirrus symbol you should be fine.

Check your banks charging policy on withdrawls - may be a standard charge i.e. £2.50 making it expensive to get out lots of small amounts from cash machine. I beleive Nationwide have no such charges but might be an effort to open a new account.

    Have fun in spain

  4. Yes - you can use in shop with your passport and the hole in the wall
