When did you first feed "real" food to your baby? Our son is 5 months old and when I was at the store today buying formula, I seen a mom who was buying cereal and some baby food for her 4 month old. She was shocked that my son has not even tried it yet. I thought they had to be 6 months old for food. If anyone thinks it is ok, should it be just regular or should it be organic? What brand is best?

  1. it's a personal choice -- some mom's start doing solids as early as 4 months, but most wait until 6 months nowadays.  I started at 6 months although my baby played with the food more than anything. I make my own food (which i encourage you to do, it's super easy and yummy for the baby). i buy organic produce (sweet potatoes, peas, squash, etc), puree it, freeze it in ice cube trays over night and then the next day put the cubes in zip lock bags and store in the freezer. have fun!

  2. I have a new baby & he is 3 months old & with the last 2 children that I have had I have started them on rice cereal @ 5 wks old & they are great. Talked with the doctor about & no problems at all. The baby foods I started them both on @ 2 1/2 months old & still no problem. My baby is also breast feeding & drinking formula. I dont think it matters if its regular or organic its up to you:)

  3. babies can start anywhere from 4-6 months but waiting until 6 is recommended. if you can then make your own, if not gerber is a great brand and start with one veggie a week so you can see if he has any reactions to it.

  4. you are right, the random lady at the store is wrong

6 months is the earliest recommended age to start cereal juice etc

some doctors recommend 12 months if you have a history of allergies

it is not safe to give an infant below the age of 6 months cereal, and is not recommended by any medical association in the world

  5. I would wait until your baby is 6 months old.  The first thing you start with is the rice baby cereal.  Then you move on to vegetables and then fruits.  It is really a personal choice about whether to go organic or not.  When my daughter was a baby, organic wasn't a choice.
