do teachers spend of most their time helping kids sound out and spell words or just read stories to them until they can remember?

  1. At this point in time, most teachers (where I live, anyway) use phonics and explicit instruction of sounds and spelling patterns to teach reading. Wholistic instruction (reading until they just "remember" words) is not taught.

  2. In kindergarten there is a lot of teaching on the letters and their sounds. In First Grade students are mostly working with letter sounds (phonics) and sight words. By second grade, students should know their basic sounds and should be working on making words and reading.

  3. She's right.  We don't teach whole language any more either.  It is important for students to understand individual sounds first, then teach them blends and how to manipulate sounds (ex. rhyming, word families, etc.)  If they already know their sounds and can spell cat, then they can spell rat, bat, hat, mat, etc.  1st graders love to sing songs and manipulate the sounds in their names or other familiar objects.  At my school be teach a daily phonics lesson, aside from teaching reading.  If you have any more questions or need clarification, just ask!

  4. For a while many schools stopped teaching phonics and reading scores dropped drastically.  I believe most schools have gone back to teaching phonics.
