Question:

First job meltdown/jitters

One of my children started their first job yesterday. By the end of the day, they suffered from information overload and cried. On top of that, they had to fill out about 15 pages of info that was completely foreign to them and couldn't bring it home. They were totally clueless about tax withholding, direct deposits, ect...Anyone gone through this lately and how or what can I do to assure them that it takes some time?

  1. The first day on the job is always difficult.  Once you get by the legal paperwork, its easier to go from there.

Everyone who spent their first day on a job is nervewracking.  It takes about two weeks to settle in and get used to the workplace, your coworkers, and your boss.

  2. Tell them it takes time to get it right and to keep plugging away.

Don't let them quit or you will be feeding that kid forever.

  3. try to tell them to take things slowly. a new job is always filled with supsense and drama. the paperwork (and that's all that it really is) should not be that important.
