Question:

First landing as an Immigrant to Canada, what to expect?

I'm going to Canada within a year as stated in my Visa, however, we won;t be staying there for good yet. I need another year to complete a contract. So when I get there, how long must I stay? Aside from the Visa check at the immigration, are there other things I must do or the rest could wait when I come back later (I.e. Health Insurance, etc)?

  1. Hi,

If you will leave without receiving PR Card, you will not be able to enter in Canada again. You will have to tell them your address where they will send you PR Card. You will get Health Card after about 2 and a half month to 3 months. SIN card takes about a month. So plan accordingly.

    Good Luck,

  2. When we came, there was paperwork at the airport for all new imigrants.. Immigration isn't the same as getting a working visa.

  3. If you are a landed immigrant I believe that you can come and go as you please.  But it is always a good idea to get basic documents such as a health card, social insurance number, etc...

  4. You really need to have a good look at the Canadian immigration site.  If you will have permanent residency in Canada next year, you should apply for your health card for sure.  It depends on what your status will be next year - visitor to Canada or permanent resident or in Canada with a temporary work visa, etc.  These links should help you.
