First mixer-freshman in high school?

Question

I've never been to a mixer, there's one next week, I plan on going.. What are they like, what should I expect?

And what do people usually wear to them?

I'm not really outgoing and I don't want to just grind people, what should I do at it? I don't want to look like an idiot standing on the side but I feel awkward going up to random people and dancing with them. What can I do to not feel awkward and what do people usually do at these things?

And do they have some organized activities going on or is it just lots of people dancing?

I know this is a lot of questions but it helps thanks.

Just wear a nice dress shirt (solid colors are best) and some nice jeans and shoes, nothing too fancy.  Nothing with holes or wrinkly.  Just make sure you smell good (deodorant and a light spray of cologne - don't go overboard with it though!) and brush your teeth - no one wants to dance with a smelly person!

Mostly it's just people dancing and not much else.  They'll probably have some refreshments and tables/seats set up.

Find a girl who isn't dancing and just ask her if she wants to dance with you - short and sweet - that's why you're there right?  If she says no, don't get discouraged - just find another girl.  You might have to face a group of girls, so maybe single one out or ask the whole group if any of them would like to dance ha!

Most importantly, don't stress!  And don't get discouraged if you don't end up dancing with anyone or get rejected - it's just a dance and your a freshman - there will be plenty more dances to come.
