If public storage offers storage space for $1 for the first month, what stops people from renting for one month, then renting a different one the next month for $1?

  1. The $1 is just to get you in.  In marketing, it's called a loss leader > same as when the grocer puts milk on sale below his cost.  The grocer knows once you're past the portals, you'll think of more things you need & start buying other items that he makes money on > bread, eggs, etc.

Storage space guy is doing the same thing, except he's locking you in for a specified period of time.

  2. They have a contract that makes up for the "free" rent in the next eleven.

  3. a contract and deposit.
