Actually its not Carey Hart. Yes Carey Hart was the first to do it in competition, and thats why he gets the claim to fame for it but I seen a documentry on FuelTV where this guy - Caleb Wyatt was the first to pull it off

FIRST EVER WAS CAREY HART!! it was travis Pastrana that did the first ever double backflip. But Carey Hart landed the first ever back flip that made freestyle history.
