1. Angle α is the angle between the walkway and the horizontal, while angle β is the angle between the vertical posts of the handrail and the walkway. (Assume that the vertical posts are perpendicular to the horizontal.) Find α if β = 42°.

  1. Since the vertical post is perpendicular to the horizontal, the angle between the post and the horizontal is 90 degrees. This is also the sum of the angles alpha and beta. So alpha + beta = 90 which means that alpha = 90 - beta = 48 degrees.
