Hi guys and girls, im looking at starting cycling but i am very unsure about what to get? there is so much out there so many brands so much to look for im just getting confused and it sucks!!

I want the bike to ride 15km to work and 15 back, casual riding maybe 50 - 100 km on weekend..

I also would like to complete a few triathlons in summer!!

I found a bike for $1,151usd Its a Specialized Transition Triathlon/Road Bike 2005 model, its second hand but in really good condition..

This is the bike "http://www.bikepedia.com/QuickBike/Bike...

Do you think that could be a good option or would u suggest buying a bike brand new for 1300usd?

If you think a new bike would be better could u please suggest a website i could look at purchasing preferably in Australia if not somewhere that ships to australia.

Thanks Matt

  1. yea you can get a sweet bike for that price. triathlons are fun too! shop around, be patient, it is easy to fall in love with the first bike you sit on. buy from a reputable shop that will fit you on the bike too.

  2. ok, above all bike fit is the most important factor.  with you being new, i dont feel it is a good idea to get some used bike over the internet.  i highly recommend going to your local shop for your first bike.  in that price range you can get a nice new bike and walk away knowing it fits you.

  3. As Phoster says, the most important issue here is fit.  If you are interested in doing triathlons and the Transition fits you well, go for it.  If you have not had a chance to ride this bike (or one like it at a local bike shop), I'd caution you against it.

Tri/Time Trial bikes force the rider into a particularly aggressive position.  If you have tried the bike and it feels OK, that's one thing.  Otherwise, you may find it incredibly miserable for long haul rides.

It may not be an ideal commuter either.  If you have to carry clothes, lunch, computer, etc. to work everyday you may find it miserable to carry a backpack while riding this bike.  You may be able to put a rack on it, but that'll kind of be like hauling an ox cart with a thoroughbred.

    Hope this helps.
