First round of Cadillac Championship suspended due to bad light – Golf news
The first round of the $8.5 million WGC-Cadillac Championship was suspended due to darkness at the TPC Blue Monster on Thursday and will resume at 8.30 a.m. on Friday.
The opening round of the tournament started amidst inclement weather. Strong winds and storm hit the course in the morning forcing the event officials to blow the horn at 11.45 a.m. When the round resumed after a delay of 2 hours 45 minutes, Hunter Mahan
smashed a score of seven-under after 11 holes and surged into a temporary lead.
The American teed off from the back and successfully managed to keep the scorecard free from blemishes. He successfully birdied the four opening holes of the back and netted another set of twin birdies on the 16th and 17th to draft
a scorecard of six-under-par.
He walked to the front with his threesome partners, Miguel Angel Jimenez and Alvaro Quiros to reel one more birdie at the opening hole before the tournament officials decided to call off the day. He wrapped the first round with a score of seven-under against
eleven holes. The player led the 71-man field in Green Hits in Regulation with 100 per cent success rate.
Mahan will complete rest of the round on Friday, but that does not seem to bother him. His comfort could be seen from the statement he gave to the press after the showdown. He said, “I guess with that storm it brought some tranquillity to the golf course.
There was just no wind. There was nothing out there.”
Meanwhile, his playing partner, Jimenez earned a single point after eleven holes. The Spaniard opened the round with a birdie on the 10th hole, but faltered on the 13th and the 17th hole before carding the second birdie of
the day. He parred the back, walked to the front, smashed a birdie and just when he was about to pick pace, the horn blew off.
On the other hand, Quiros drafted a score of three-under-par with seven holes left to play. The Spaniard aced the opening hole, birdied the 12th and bogeyed the 18th before birdying the first green.
