First round of Tenerife Ladies Match Play tournament in progress
The first round of the Tenerife Ladies Match Play at the Golf Las Americas, turned out to be a glorious sunny morning when Australian Karen Lunn overtook Zuzana Kamasova of Slovakia with 6 & 5. Lunn won six holes in continuation and only gave away the opening
hole of the front nine.
Some 32 players were scheduled to play on the first day while the draws were announced yesterday. A total of 16 rounds will be played on the first day followed by eight rounds on Saturday. The successful pairs will proceed to the final round on Sunday for
the €40,000 prize money.
In another decisive round, Becky Brewerton of Wales carded an overwhelming victory of 8 & 6 over Australian Kristie Smith. The round turned out to be a whirlwind rollercoaster ride for Brewerton when she pulled in a stunning show, carding eight holes and
did not give away any to the Aussie.
Laura Davies of England landed a victory when she defeated American Hannah Jun in a tight match. Davies was two holes better with one to go.
Carlota Ciganda of Spain took the better of her country mate Paula Marti with a 6&4 to win her first round. Rest of the players were still locked up in a tight battle to win their respective rounds as the leaderboard was continuously updated till the last
reports.
Australian Frances Bondad won her round in a tight 2&1 when she defeated South African Ashleigh Simon. Trish Johnson is still challenging her contender, the Australian, Stacey Keating, with her tons of experience at the Golf Las Americas to win the first
round.
Keating seems to be leading the round with 1 up before making the turn. Frenchwoman Virginie Lagoutte-Clement is also leading the round with 1 up over her contender Nikki Garrett of Australia.
The sponsors of the event have come up with lucrative prize cheques for the winner and runners up as well as a luxurious Stingray 225CX Sport Boat X 260 worth €58,000 for an Ace on the 11th. The boat is apparently more attractive then the winner's share
and would definitely ensure some thrilling display of skill and precision.
Turismo deTenerife is the official sponsor for the event and is supported by the
Gobierno de Canarias, Real Federación Española de Golf and Federación Canaria de Golf.
