First round of Transitions Championship suspended due to low light - Golf News
The first round of the Transitions Championship was suspended on Thursday due to poor light conditions prevalent at the Copperhead Course in Tampa Bay. It will continue on Friday at the previous scheduled tee timings for the second round.
The officials of the tournament decided to put the round on the halt, when it became difficult to spot the ball on the course on Thursday. The issue arose, when fog and visibility caused a 70 minute-delay in the start of the round. The front group ended
up teeing off at 8:55 in the morning, which eventually delayed the tee timings for the group in the afternoon.
Three players left the course without completing their rounds, but they have been scheduled to wrap up the unfinished holes before the start of the second round. Russell Knox, Bobby Gates and Joseph Bramlett were standing on the 17th green, when
the horn blew.
Meanwhile, Paul Casey took advantage of the day light and surged into the lead, by carding a round of 7-under par. He was chased by a group of four players that included Garrett Willis, Martin Laird, Nick Watney and Scott Stallings.
The defending champion, Jim Furyk finished tied in fourth place. He compiled a scorecard of four-under par with the help of five birdies and one bogey.
The best shot of the day was delivered by Cameron Tringale. The American hit a 4-iron from 3 yards at the par-3 eighth hole, which plunged over the entire fairway and fell straight into the cup to card the only hole-in-one. The superb shot bought his score
down to 1-over par.
Another impressive shot was delivered by the world-number one, Martin Kaymer, in the opening hole on the front. The German eagled the par-5 first hole after he hit a 2-iron on the fairway to reach the green in two shots.
Kaymer compiled a score of three-under par, but he was not happy with his game. He said, “It's a fantastic golf course, I think one of the best I've played in America, to be honest. It is very difficult. You have to hit a lot of good tee shots. I made a
couple of mistakes today because I was not 100 percent sure about the golf course. I missed on the wrong side. So if I can avoid those things tomorrow, it would be nice.”
The second round will continue tomorrow and hopefully light conditions will not be problem for the remainder of the tournament.
