First round of Travelers Championship suspended due to bad weather
First round of the Travelers Championship was suspended at 11.30 am, due to inclement weather conditions on Thursday, June 23. Play will resume on Friday morning at 7.00 am. The venue for the four-day event, Tournament Player Club
(TPC) River Highland, was rain wrecked and hence was pronounced as unplayable.
According to the Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour official website, an inch of rain fell in the morning. The tournament was later halted, after heavy clouds hampered the visibility on the course. The tour officials rescheduled
the round at 5.30 pm, but the course conditions did not improve, forcing the organisers to suspend play.
PGA Tour Vice President of Rules, Mark Russell told the press, “We got another 25 minutes of rain and the golf course is saturated. We did not think that last rain was going to be as bad as it was but it continued to rain and we were
right back to where we started. We looked at it and there were some areas where we just couldn’t play golf.”
Only six players managed to complete the round, which included Kris Blanks who carded a 68, Ben Curtis who posted a 69, Graham DeLaet who signed for a 70, and Scott Stallings and Steve Elkington, who made a 71 each. Meanwhile, Paul
Goydos failed to save par and signed for a 72.
Leading the course was American Michael Bradley, despite an unfinished round. The veteran teed-off from the front and reeled seven birdies against one bogey. Bradley faced problems in driving accuracy, a fact evident from his stats
that showed a success rate of 50 percent, which meant that he missed 8 fairways. Despite that, he managed to hit 14 greens in regulation, meaning he was nearly flawless on the fairway to green route.
“The course is unplayable,” said Bradley. “There’s a lot of water on the course. It’s going to be a little wet [Friday] but it’s two holes and I’m done,” said Bradley, who has played a total of 16 holes so far.
Friday’s forecast is showing signs of another thunderstorm, which might hit the area in the afternoon.
