Question:

First thing we do, let's kill all the breeders...?

So - there was one TV programme we've been reading about all day. I haven't seen it, since I don't live in England. However - if everyone stops breeding dogs - then what's left?

Here's the scenario I see: put the pressure on good breeders, so they stop. This only leaves the crappy BYBs and puppy mills. Of course, the dogs these "breeders" produce are c**p, thus proving all the AR people correct - so lets shut them down too. Then, we have left all those irresponsible people for know yes than a gnat does about breeding, and let there dog have an "ooops" litter, since they really thought leaving an unattended ****** in heat outside while they answered the phone was okay. Again, these aren't going to be the best dogs in the world - so lets stop that too.

So - are you willing to have a world without dogs? Or shall we try to continue to educate ourselves on good breeding practises, the history and health concerns of our chosen breeds, and support RESPONSIBLE breeding practises?

  1. Kip's Mum, I didn't watch it (gotta think of my blood pressure!) besides, heard it all before, every year, regular as clockwork, just around Crufts.

Nah, I don't think you've got the idea at all.

What we do is carry on breeding dogs - any dogs, as long as they are not related (or even the same breed). Just grab 2 dogs, mate them together & sell them for as much as we can. People who can only cope with little dogs might end up with a Wolfhound size dog, people with no experience of dogs could end up with a very wily little dog who looks like a Bichon but has the brain of an Akita, but, what the h**l? They'll be free of diseases won't they? Ooops - maybe not because we won't know what to test for so we won't be doing any hip scoring or eye testing will we?

  2. I would rather cut off my arm then live without dogs-

Unfortunatley I do support bad breeders because I rescue-

I really don't think it's gonna be an easy fix.. BUt I will continue to rescue as long as there is a lonlley dog inthe cage without a family.. Sorry

  3. Educating people is not working.

Maybe if the entire species of dog eventually died out ( of natural causes ), then greedy, careless and selfish people would quit breeding ( it seems like that is the majority of the type that breed. )

Then dogs wouldn't have to suffer at the hands of the most dangerous animal on this planet. Human.

Who are you directing your question and comments to?

It sounds like you are arguing with someone.

If having a world without dogs meant they didn't have to suffer, I would be sad, but glad they didn't have to suffer anymore.

  4. i dont wanna live in a world without dogs =(

  5. Don't let them get to you. It really isn't worth it.

Those with a clue know the score and the reality and aren't swayed by propaganda.

  6. All the OMG! people who watch that program are about to hit the boards at any minute!

They are the ones who need to be educated the most because they are so believing what they see irregardless if the the report is slanted towards one group or not.

Responsible breeding will produce healthy sound dogs.

Irresponsible breeding will only allow more show like this one to be taped and aired!

I'm not going to live in a dog less world!

  7. I think puppy mills should be shut down, however, people will always fail to get their animals fixed/altered and those animals will continue to get pregnant and have puppies. And people will continue to breed dogs. We have all of our animals fixed, even though I love puppies, we get all of our animals spayed/neutered. There will always be tons of animals in shelters because someone didn't get their pet fixed and/or didn't know how to take care of them. However, we can't save the world, we can just do our best to make a difference.

  8. lol who the h**l cares what these people think?  I seriously doubt any of the responsible breeders on here are going to stop because "oh no meller was talking trash about breeding blah blah blah..."  Let him talk, his little rant earlier not only proves how susceptible and ignorant the common person is...

    *thanks God for actual intelligence*

and truthfully, these morons forget, shut down breeding practices, you basically gave up on the breeds we have now, well no they will still exist, but have more problems than before, and eventually we will have mutts... the people ranting about this aren't that smart... honestly, I've seen skin cells in biology class that had more sense then them.

  9. I am not quite sure that can be achieved-shutting down "puppy mills".

However, it may be a good idea to get involved with a Spay/Neuter program in your city.  What are the reasons most people do not do this? Time/money.  Then provide free clinics or reduced days that spay and neutering will be done in your area by a vet or student if there is a vet school near by.  Include cats in the program.

As my friend says"Become a part of the solution, not the problem"

  10. The BBC should not get involved in matters they know nothing about and should stick to broadcasting Eastenders!

    ADD-

Terrier you raise some excellent points “This programme was NOT about "killing all the breeders". It was about highlighting some of the problems within the show ring, and their effects on the health of breeds”

BUT and this is a big but, people are easily led and judging by all the questions I saw it seems most of the people who watched it last night are now ANTI BREEDERS.

Take a look at this question.

    I just came across this comment;

"The kennel club and breeders should be put down like the poor dogs that have these health issuses through them!"

  11. Even if I had the ability to see it - digital cable with the BBC included in the package - I still wouldn't have watched it. Just from the bit I read it sounds like PETA or some other group and a bunch of already biased people put the show together. Anything one sided for one argument or another never gets any viewing from me.

Unfortunately people need to realize you can't paint everyone with the same brush. And that if people did more research than just  one day of internet reading before they actually bought one breed or another a lot of the problems would be solved.

  12. No, responsible breeders should be supported not killed off.

Less responsible breeders who like to see some 'red' (denoting Championship status) on their pedigrees, take their (untested) b*****s to a (untested) Champion, produce a fine litter on paper, but the puppies could suffer serious health problems. This is not a breeder I would want to buy a puppy from.

Personally I didn't bother to watch the programme.

Anybody who wants to watch the programme can do so via the internet. Link above.

I would ask all those slamming the programme without seeing it to reconsider. The point of the programme was that there are problems within the dog showing world - and those problems are not consigned to the history books. That the problems are not confined to the lousy puppy farms but they go right to the top.

You talk of RESPONSIBLE breeding practices. How do you justify a dog that suffers from syringomyelia being used at stud 34 times? Most of those matings occurred AFTER diagnosis. Responsible?

Why wasn't that dog barred from the show ring? Is a system that allows dogs like *that* to win CCs at major events responsible?

PeTA? Hardly. The show did give the impression that it was not too late to change. I doubt very much whether PeTA could endorse that.

This programme was NOT about "killing all the breeders". It was about highlighting some of the problems within the show ring, and their effects on the health of breeds.

Nor was there any suggestion that anybody should "just breed crossbreeds".

True, it concentrated its  coverage on the most unhealthy breeds (Pug, GSD, Bulldog, CKCS...etc). I believe that Border terriers (ie those bred by Ronnie Irving) are one breed that doesn't have many problems - but the point is that the system as set up at the moment allows sick, crippled dogs to be placed in the show ring. That cannot be right.

If those that saw this programme are those in most need of education, then I come into that category, and would be very grateful to learn.

  14. i don't get ur point but..... i really HATE puppy mills and i HATE breeders who tink that they know it all when  they say that we are all responsible breeders when they breed poor girls over and over again!!!!!    dey are just absolutely clueless!!! they are everywhere and they suck big time!! they need to know what is right and what is wrong and yeah..... every one of them should be killed....... RESPONSIBLE is right!!

  15. I think you need to step away from the keyboard, and take Kip for a walk...Dont worry about it, they are just immature children!!

  16. To those of you who haven't seen it, but want to make their own opinion on it:
