Here is the thing, I have shingled about 5-6 roofs with my brother. I was pretty much the gopher. He always starts the shingling, etc and I'm the tosser or go get person. The last few house we've done has been heritage so no pattern is needed. Very easy but I've never started it. My brother bailed on me on 3 shingling jobs that are all 3 tab. I have someone to help me but they don't know either. We are using starter strip that we cut from the shingles themselves (cheaper) but we are not sure if we start with a full starter stip piece, etc and the same goes for the shingles. Can any one give us instructions or a good web site to go to to learn this. My brother did do the other side of this house and he has always shingled in a stair step/pyramid form-never straight back and forth way. Hope this explains my knowledge and hope someone can help.

  1. I would imagine GAF and Tamko had the web page. Instructions are often printed on the bundle wrap, keeping in mind they are for gable ends, not hip roofs.

  2. Start at the bottom with a row of shingles with the tabs cut off. Then move up a row, with the tabs laying at the end of the roof (overlapping the previous row). Make sure you offset the joints between the rows by 1/2 the shingle width. Continue up the roof in this fashion until you reach the top.

  4. in a stair step on 3 in ones usually the rain channels wont line up(strait up)the way we do it is to start with multiples of 5 and an eighth.starter first one cut in half then full ones after that(ripped starter). for ur books, ill take afull shingle cut my number off (5 and an eighth) then since were using multiples of that number next one i cut 10 and a quarter next 15 an 3/8s next 20 1/2 next 25 5/8s next 30 3/4 last 35 7/8s.  keep ur factor ends to the inside of roof   factory to factory  and ur fall off pieces from ur books will work on the other side

cut them on the ground an lay them one on top eachother ,they sould stair step up an the rain chanells shouldnt line up   hope this makes sense
