Question:

First time Paris - Help?

I'll be taking the train from Amsterdam to Paris. I am wondering how far is the train station located from the city center? And once in the train station, how can I get to the major sights? Is it walkable? If you could tell me where the train station is located, I'd be grateful. So I could book my hotel accordingly.

  1. Right next to Gare Du Nord is a hotel called the New Hotel...I have stayed there many times...The hotel itself is clean, AC if needed and the best thing is it right there by the subway and train station. The area seems to have gone down a bit...but still seemed safe (at least it was 2 years ago) Typical french breakfast included in the price of the room....:) and you will love how close you are to the subway and trains.

  2. The train from Amsterdam will arrive at the Gare du Nord. The Gare du Nord is in the 10th arrondissement.

There is no particular reason for staying in the area although there is also no special reason why you shouldn't stay around the train station. However, its just a short metro ride to anyplace else in Paris from the station so why not stay in a somewhat more central area.

I suggest people stay in the very most central arrondissements which are 1-6 with a particular emphasis on the 5th and 6th on the Left Bank.

  3. The train from Amsterdam arrives at the Gare du Nord. This is just north of the centre, but is prety central anyway.

There are plenty of cheap hotels near the Gare du Nord. You don't really need to book (unless you're arriving late at night). Just get off the train and walk across the street to one or other of the hotels.

From that area, you can easily reach most of the sights by the underground system which is easy and fast, but avoid the rush hour. Get a weekly pass if you are staying that long. But it's also nice to walk around
