I really want to try out, since being an actress is my goal...but I've never auditioned before and I'm REALLY nervous, and I have no idea where my standards are, or if I'm even that good at acting yet, since I'm also about to take my first class..any advice, or ways to help me out? it'd be really appreciateted. =]

  1. Auditioning is tough. Sometimes it can be so nervewracking that you can barely speak.  But the best way to stop those nerves is to just get right through it.  In most auditions I've done for school, all I've had to do was sing about 30 seconds of a song and recite about a paragraph of a script.  Yes, its really scary.

The best advice I can give you is to do your best.  I bet that your best will be good enough! If you are told to sing in your audition, the song is really what makes a good impression.  If you pick a slow ballad that doesnt require any vocal range, your schools director won't be impressed.  I'd pick a sort of up beat song that you know really well, and sing your favorite part of it. That part most likely fits your vocal range the best.  When your singing, sing your words clearly so that the crowd can understand you. Always smile.  And if you want, you can sway to the song as well to show that you are into it.

If you have to recite some lines, speak slowly.  That way, you have less chances of stuttering or messing up a word.

Other than that, HAVE FUN!!!!  It feels so good when you are done with the audition, you'll feel like your on top of the world. And you'll feel even better if you get a leading roll! Good luck!

  2. LOL, i took my first class last year. I'm in a drama magnet.

Just wait until you get to the class the teacher will help you out.

You can try going to watching and acting in performances at a local community theater, which could help you get some experience.

Also try performing monologues in front of family and friends. Also take some voice lessons, that can help train your ear and also teach you how to use your diaphragm properly and use your voice without hurting it.

    Good luck!

    Break a leg ;))

  3. Well there is always a first time first time for everything.   I understand it's fun being an actress but you must be the best out of the best.  It's pretty hard to obtain a goal like that just so you know.

But I wish you luck though.

  4. Practice makes perfect. ;) If the audition requires a prepared piece, then find a monologue (or song) that's appropriate to the show. It'll help if you know the show, so you'll know if there's a role you like enough to audition for, then find a monologue that can work for that role.

Since it's a musical, they'll probably ask you to prepare 8-16 bars of a song. Again, find a song that fit the show, and shows your range. For example, if the show's The Sound of Music, something from Miley Cyrus probably won't cut it. ;)

Bottom line, familiarize yourself with the show the best you can.
