First time camera buyer...?

Question

Okay so i am going to be taking a photography class in school.

And the camera needs to be the film kind.

But I dont know what kind of camera to buy. We will be taking black and white pictures since it is photography 1.

But i also plan on taking AP photo the year after and we then take color pictures.

So my problem is i dont know what camera to get that will satisfy these two needs.

I am not sure if it has to be 35mm or 36mm.

the nikon does work and you should buy yours at best buy because they have good brands for the camera you will be needing

Kodak and canon are the best in the industry,How ever if you want to try some thing more ...you can go for Panasonic or Sony.They have different cameras with them.

The camera you need is indeed a 35 mm SLR.  Nikon is one of the ones used by many photographers over the past nearly fifty years, so you can rely on them as a sturdy camera that you can use in your class.

Where you may have heard 36 mm mentioned is the fact that the full frame of the negative is actually 36 x 24 mm in size.  The films width is 35 mm including the sprocket holes, ergo 35 mm film

Any Nikon camera with a "D" in front of its model number is a digital SLR, so you cannot use film in it.  The area in the camera that would have held film has a sensor installed, so you cannot put film in it.

Nikon made some excellent 35 mm cameras over the past 15 years that you can use in your class and then if you are interested, you can buy a Nikon DSLR that will use the same lenses you have been using for class.

Look on craigslist for a used Nikon with standard zoom lens for under $200 ... many are in the $75 to $150 range

It will be 35mm, as 36mm does not, actually, exist.

The Nikon D40 is a purely digital camera.

I would suggest getting a camera from the Nikon "F" series, as those accept any Nikkor lens, including those made for the D40, which allows for great interchangability if you have a D40.

Also, Nikon just makes nice cameras, I know, I've used basically all of Nikon's F series cameras.
