First time car driver?

Which is the best car to buy for first time car driver in the UK. Both easy and cost effective and importantly more safe. Honest answers are highly appreciate

Get a small car, they're easier to control, go for a few test drives just to see which car 'suits' you best. I first drove on public roads in september last year, and i had to decide between a large four wheel drive, and a small sedan, i found the sedan to be much easier to drive with and control.
