  1. STEERING Steer smoothly whether you are driving straight ahead, turning or backing up.

ACCELERATION Accelerate smoothly and moderately. Don't race the engine or cause it to stall.

BRAKING Bring the vehicle to a stop gently. Start braking well before your stopping position to avoid "jerky" stops. Make sure you stop your vehicle in the proper position of the lane.

CLUTCH/GEAR Always be sure your vehicle is in the correct gear. With either an automatic or a manual transmission, shift into the proper gear at the right time without "grinding" the gears.

SPEED Obey the posted speed limit, of course, but also adjust your speed properly due to weather, road, visibility and traffic conditions.

FOLLOWING DISTANCE Keep an adequate space "cushion" between your vehicle and those you are following. Use the "two second rule" described in the Driver's Manual. Be sure to increase your following distance in poor weather or visibility.

TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES Know the meanings of signs, signals and pavement markings, and obey them consistently.

STOPPING POSITION If a stop is required, stop your vehicle before it reaches an intersecting street. If stop lines or crosswalks are present, stop before crossing them. If your view is blocked after stopping behind the crosswalk, move up until you can clearly see your way, then stop again if necessary.

LANE SELECTION AND POSITION Keep your vehicle in the proper traffic lane, especially when preparing to make turns. Don't allow room for another vehicle to pass you on the side that you are turning toward.

COMMUNICATION Let other drivers and pedestrians know which way you want to go. Use your directional signals or horn consistently and at the proper times.

OBSERVATION Look for and identify potential problems or hazards in the traffic around you - not just straight ahead, but behind you and on either side. Check your mirrors frequently, but be sure to look over your shoulder behind you when changing lanes or backing up.

ANTICIPATE & REACT TO OTHERS Anticipate possible driving errors by others and be ready to react safely to make up for their mistakes.

  2. If your nervous, I suggest you do some practise in an empty parking lot, then head out for a small neighbourhood to practise some turns. After your comfertable with all that, then you should head out to the roads. Trust me, after a while you'll enjoy driving =)

  3. Try to imagine that your dad isnt there and you are just going for a little joy ride in your parents car while they are on vacation, and you dont wanna do anything to get caught so you make sure that you do everything right and be real carefull.

  4. Like anything new, it takes getting used to. Practice in parking lots and/or roads with low traffic and gradually go from there.

  5. Don't crash!

  6. It sounds like you need to go to a driving school,or sears driving classes, parents are sometimes not the best teachers,or do you have a friend that is a good driver that can teach you, they have to have a lot of patience,Remember you are in control, you can be killed or kill someone with a car so take it seriously and listen to your instructor, get your mind in the right place and concentrate on what you are doing.

  7. Just start out in an empty parking lot and go slow. Drive around in circles and practice making easy turns - left and right. Practice smooth braking and just get a feel of the car. Practice the mechanics of steering and speeding up and slowing down. Driving isn't hard at all. It will come naturally to you with a little bit of practice. You will feel more comfortable with it after every time you drive. Soon, you can go on the outside of a empty parking lot that has little to no traffic and drive around in the real streets in a bigger circle. Just stay calm and be relaxed. And be careful. Have fun =)

  8. go easy.. don't rush

  9. listen to your dad and  look where your going

  10. Try to relax.  You can't do anything well if you're all tense.  Go slower than you think you need to, because the slower you go the more time you have to react.  Don't try to learn everything all at once.  It takes a while. The more you drive, the more you learn.

A lot depends on your dad.  If he is patient and relaxed you can get a lot accomplished. If not, then there's not much -you- can do.

When I was learning to drive my dad was very patient and a good teacher. But I couldn't drive with my mom in the car.  She was constantly pointing out things--Look out for that guy on the bicycle. Do you see that guy pulling out up ahead?  Watch out, you're coming to a red light.  This was really distracting!  I saw all these things.  But Mom just couldn't shut up.  Soon I had to just refuse to drive with her in the car.

We all learn to drive one way or another, so don't worry.

  11. Just go slow and learn to tune out all the nervous stuff.  Put your blinkers on and put a new driver sign in the window.  You might get a few honks and a finger or two, but who the h**l cares.  A for your dad, just relax a bit and if he yells, don't hit the gas in a panic.  Learn to filter him out a bit. Get used to him yelling or whatever (I assume you are somewhat used to it) and you won't react unpredictably when he scares you.  Go at your own pace.
