First time getting braces tightened?

I'm getting my braces tightened for the first time. Will it hurt? Is there any pain while you are actually in the office? Does it hurt more than when you first got them on? Any other info for me? Thanks so much!

  1. It definitely varies, okay?

For me, sometimes it hurt, and sometimes it didn't...

But while it is happening it didn't really hurt for me.  It was just pressure.

  2. take some advil before u get them tightened ..sometimes your teeth get a little sore and hurt after they have been tightened but the advil will help and it doesnt hurt when u r actually in the office.  and it prolly wont hurt more then when u first got them on.. it didnt for me but everybodys different ...try the advil though, it helped me.

  3. It depends on what they do to you at your first adjustment.  I had a new archwire put on and all my cute pink ligs replaced with a wire that effectively laced them together to close gaps and it was quite painful; much worse than when they put the braces on. I though my teeth were going to fall out when they finally pulled the wire tight. Then they put rubber bands on both sides of my mouth to get my lower jaw moving and that was the final touch. I was not able to open my mouth when they asked me when I could come in for my next appointment. Take Advil just in case.  You never know what surprises they have  in store for you.

  4. It hurts a little at the office, and afterwards it hurts a little bit more than when you get them on.

  5. okay all i can say is, dont worry :) you will be alright. when i was first going to get it tightened i was really scared and thought i would faint! but then when i got there, it really wasnt bad at all, they just turn it a little on the side and you kind of feel like your teeth are like messed up ahah, but it doesnt hurt at all. i dont think there wld be any pain while you are actually in the office. but of course, you are going to feel it when they tighten it, but if you ask if its going to really hurt,, then no. if you thought first getting your braces on hurt a LOT, then you might think its a little painful. but if you thought it's the pain you can endure, then i think its going to be alright. :)

    i wish you luck!!

  6. From my personal experience, I never experienced "pain" but later after my appointment I might on occasion feel some discomfort- nothing that a little tylenol wouldn't help.

They don't actually tighten anything.  They change your archwires.  It's a quick appointment.

The whole treatment is well worth any discomfort you may experience.

  7. everyone says it hurts majorly but it honestly did not hurt me at all. there were occasional light pains in certain parts of my mouth but nothing big...i took an aspirin before the appointment and didnt feel anything. i didnt have to take another aspirin afterwards though. when i first got them on it hurt soooo much for me, but tightening was no big deal to me
