First time growing cucumbers,how do i tell the best time to harvest?

  1. When they are 5 to 6 inches long - depending on which type you have planted. Smaller for pickles, larger for burp-less.


  2. if they start to turn yellow you are letting them get too big. Normally you can tell from the seeds how long their optimum size it...I would say somewhere between 8-10 inches unless you are using the burpless or english cukes they will usually run 16-20 inches long.

      I have a fence around my garden - I grow the cukes near the fence - when the vines start growing I put them on the fence so they climb the fence - cucumbers hang down and you can see them and the ground bugs (slugs and others) won't bother them.  Just need to be sure at the end of the year to till everything under and put lots of compost in that area if you are going to grow them again next year.

      I put alot of powered lime around the garden in late fall - before I till it under - then I sprinkle the pelletized lime around after I'm done tilling - slow release.
