I"m in the process of buying books for us... what other material do I need? Do I need to keep an attendance chart or a daily curriculum book of what we did, will do and our goals? I'm lost of what material I need to prove I am teaching - are the workbooks good enough proof? Help

  1. This will vary depending on your state.

FWIW, I would not just purchase books and workbooks.  You need more than that to have a rich, full curriculum.  You need to purchase curricula based on your child's/children's learning style.

If you do find out you need records, I highly recommend using Homeschool Tracker Plus.

For college admissions, you need to have these for high school:  a transcript, portfolio, and SAT/ACT test scores.  So start putting together the transcript and portfolio together starting with freshman classes.  Don't try to go back and do it 3-4 years from now.

  2. Requirements vary from state to state. Definitely check out your state laws. http://www.hslda.org

Also, just because record keeping may not be required, it is a good idea to keep excellent records in case you ever want to re-enroll them in public school or if you need to prove to the school board that you are actually schooling. I keep a list of curriculum used and a portfolio for each of my children. I pull out 2-3 samples per subject area each month.

  3. Well you can go to hslda.org and you will see the laws of wherever you live. I believe that for high school you need to have a school program. To do this you go to your local school or a school that can help homeschoolers and you ask them for the 9th grade curriculum.

I live in Delaware so here at the end of the year we get this paper that we need to sign and put how many days we worked that year and things like that. That is how i can prove that I am in school.

  4. Whatever will work best for you. Keeping record of what you are doing and setting goals is a good thing to do. If you're using workbooks you should set a max. number of pages that should be done every day and a target date to have that workbook finished. Good luck!!

  5. You need to check with your state. You might want to try a company that gives you lesson plans and keep you records for you. It could help you for your first year, so you'll know what to expect next year. Good luck.
