  1. listen to your riding instructor. mares can instill fear in even the most experience horse person...they are evil when the mood strikes

EDIT since you're in aus if you're in NSW give jackaroo horse transport a call, or cessnock horse transport and they'll give you his number, his names john, he's great guy and his wife rescues great horses and gives them new homes. they operate pretty much all over NSW call 1223 and ask for cessnock horse transport or jackaroo horse transport, it's located near newcastle..

read dictionary JT, it will teach you words like...hmm..instill

and no i'm not going thumb you down, like you did to me, because I think we can still work this out and one day in the distant future we can even be awkward friends

  2. LUCKY!!!

Well, I think that if your trainer suggests you get a gelding maybe you should. Because he/she is trying to help you and gettting a gelding may benifit you better than a mare. Show he/she the mare and see how he/she likes it.

  3. Mares can instill fear? WTF does that even mean???

Look the benefits to having a gelding over a mare is simple, a gelding doesn't cycle obviously...They are just more consistent in their mood. But I have known lots of fantastic athletic mares in my day. Test ride all of them and buy the most suitable for your skill level.

  4. a gelding would be better because every few months a mare goes into heat and she will most likely get upset  and you wont be able to ride for a while

  5. When your buying a horse, don't buy it because of the appearance, and its also always nicer and cheaper to find one in a shelter. There are many websites to go on to find a horse, and its always easy finding pets on craigslist too!! =)

  6. There is nothing wrong with a mare, only that they can be a bit more temperamental. For your first horse, a gelding may be slightly easier to handle, but my first horse is a mare and except for when she is in season, she isn't any different.

If she is well educated, and suits your abilities,  then go for it.  Good Luck.

  7. There is no reason not to get a mare if the horse is suitable. Just ask the person selling if it displays seasonal behaviour when in heat. Some mares may be difficult when in season and others do not show any symptoms.
