i am going to use an iud as a method of birth control here in the next month or so. i've used just about everything else out there: the pill (a few different brands), the depo, the ring, the patch... the only thing i really liked was the shot. but because of osteoporosis, my doctor only let me take it for 2 years, so the depo is out of the question. i hated the pill. i gained tons of weight and got pregnant on it. i had horrible mood swings, too. my doctor doesn't offer the patch. and the ring was too uncomfortable. anyways, i guess i just want to get others opinions on iud's. the pro's and con's from personal experiences, if anyone has gotten pregnant while using an iud, bad side effects, etc. thank you!!

  1. I used to work in an OB/GYN office and I know of at least one case where I knew someone personally who got pregnant with it.  It caused all sorts of problems, but apparently, pregnancy with an IUD is rare.

My sister has had one for a few months and so far she's liked it, except for having to find the little string once a month.  The way she describes it, you have to give yourself a vaginal exam to find it.

I also had a friend who knew someone that had one.  She got pregnant with it as well.  Her doctor told her that IUDs are supposed to abort the pregnancy if it happens.  I asked my doctor about this and she told me quite frankly that's up for debate on whether or not they are supposed to do that.

  2. the copper iud is really good, it has NO hormones and the copper simply kills the sperm. you can also leave it in up to 12 years and when you want to have kids you can take it out and get pregnant as soon as the first time, this is because there are NO hormones so that means no wait period.

  3. I work in an ob/gyn office and we insert a ton of iud's now, we haven't had alot of complaints, what I have heard is that the partner can "feel" it sometimes during intercourse and there is some pain with insertion, also twice in the last couple years we have had to do surgery to remove the iud from other areas of the body, one was wedged near her lung, it's rare but they can move from the cervix.

  4. Sounds like you want opinions about how people liked the IUD or disliked it based on the side effects and risks. An IUD does not always prevent pregnancy and in some cases just prevents implantation. So keep in mind that some women have had emotional issues knowing that this is happening each month. Most of which were not made aware of this fact until after they had it implanted

There have been quite a few cases of pregnancy with IUD's inserted and this is a big risk as well. Sounds like you have been on birth control for a long time. Do you think you ever want to have another pregnancy? I saw that you said you got pregnant but you did not say if you had your baby or aborted it. Keep in mind that some of these birth control methods may affect future fertility.

There is also a risk, however small or large is debatable, of endometriosis and hysterectomy due to complications of the IUD. Although this risk is lower now than it was in the older IUD's it is still there.

  5. I loved my Mirena IUD. The only con I had while having it was I spotted during the first 3 months, but after that it got better and by 6 months my body had regulated and everything was fine for me. I didn't have any problems or worries for the 3 years I had it and I was able to become pregnant as soon as I had it removed.

Based on my experience with the IUD and other forms of birth control I would recommend the IUD hands down, and after this baby I plan to get another IUD.

  6. I too had the copper IUD, but I too also got pregnant while I still had in my IUD. I had it for 8 years with NO COMPLICATIONS, I LOVED IT!! never even had a scare of pregnancy up until January of this year. I found out I was 6 1/2 weeks pregnant & was told that depending on where the IUD & the baby where I would have to have it removed RIGHT AWAY! Leaving it in I had a 50/50 chance of miscarriage, removing it took the chances of miscarriage to 30%. I had an ultrasound that determined that it was clear to remove the IUD & had it done 2 days later. I am now due in about 3 weeks with a healthy baby girl.

  7. I have had an IUD since my baby was 5 weeks old. I love it! The first day or so, you can kind of tell that something is there, like having a tampon in or something, but after that, you feel nothing. I have had no side effects what so ever. I was also on the depo, which I loved, because it took my periods away completely. But I was also told by my OB/GYN that I had been on it for too long. I had gotten pregnant on the pill, the patch made me sick, etc. I have only had one period since I had the IUD put in, and it was only for 1 day. I think you will love it too! And to not have to think about birth control for 5 years is a big plus for me too!
