First-time leaser, Do I need credit to Rent an apartment?

Im 18 and I just got my credit card today. I have $1,300 in my bank account and im working full time.

Do I need good credit to lease an apartment for a 7-month lease? The apartment is $500 a month.

Can i try to get the apartment right now? ( Im thinking i cant)

Or would I just have to save up another $2,200 + my $1,300 to equal $3,500 (total of 7 months rent) and then try to get the apartment?

(in Texas)

Thanks

  1. Some landlords will ask for your credit report, others will not.  All have asked me to verify my employment and salary.  I don't think it is reasonable for them to expect you have the full lease amount saved in advance.

For your own budget - remember the other expenses you will have once you get the apartment (utilities, etc).

I would go for it, the worse they can say is "no".  Good luck!

  2. u might be able to but it will be hard....one factor could be how long u have held your job.....also give good references, it just depends on the landlord......i think u have a chance, me and my buddy rented a house at 18

    good luck man
