First time on a looong train ride?

Question

This is the first time I'm traveling for a long while on the train, as in for more then 10 hours, at night. Anyway, I'll be traveling AmTrak, and I checked their website to see if they have security screenings. They do. Besides that, my question is this: When they say, Checked Baggage Screening, does this include your carry-ons? Also, I have a hard time falling asleep when I'm traveling, and I can't use sleep aids, what do you suggest I bring to keep me entertained. Also, is the dining on board good? Well you certainely have lots of love to keep you entertained. The only thing that can entertain me on a long train/plane/car ride is sleep or a book. I suggest you don't sleep the night before so that you're really tired.

I'm going on an 8 hour night time coach trip to London in a few days and i was wondering the same thing. I think I'll just try to get as much sleep as possible before i head off.

If the dining car is serving when you're on the train, the food is quite good.  

The food in the snack bar is just so-so--sandwiches and things warmed up in a microwave, for the most part.

Many folks take along an iPod or a CD player, and listen to quiet music or books on tape.
