Question:

First time parent, need help!?

we just got discharged from the hospital lastnight, when i left they give me couples of similac for my baby boy. My question is, my baby only drank the most 25-30cc, what left over can i give it to my baby for the nxt 3 hours ? I've been throwing it away after 1 use, so i just wonder if I still can use it after its been opened for 3 hours :-) .. thanks for all of your answer! oh, and btw, just like other women, I also got cut "down there" wonder what kind of foods should i avoid eating .. I"m also breastfreeding, what kind of foods I should and shouldn't eat ..... Thanks all again ^_^

  1. As for the avoiding walking question?  No.  I did normal routine things (it actually felt good to be out of bed).  I drove to run errands, did light shopping, etc.  As long as you don't overdo it, you'll most likely be fine.  After I had my baby, I was cleaning out my old apt. and moving into a new one.  The only time I was uncomfortable was one day while moving things when I had been going up/down stairs all day.  That was a bit much for me.  But normal everyday simple routines would be fine.  I see no reason to stay in bed for 2 weeks just for that!


  2. There is technically no foods that breastfeeding woman must avoid. However some foods can cause mild reaction such as spicy foods, cabbage, chocolate and foods high in C concentrate. It will depend on your own body and the sensitivity of your baby.

    Foods such as cabbage, garlic, chilli & curry may cause your baby to experience discomfort with wind. Although there is no research to support this, centuries of mothers will agree that keep these foods to a minimum if you want a good nights sleep. Some strongly flavoured foods may change the taste of your milk, although babies enjoy a variety of breast milk flavours, if you baby suddenly becomes fussy at the breast after you eat particular foods (for example garlic) you be best to avoid that food while breastfeeding. However you baby's tolerance may improve as he/she gets older so you may be able to re-introduce that food.

    Other foods & drinks to watch out for are; pineapple/juice (being the worst offender) and other vitamin C rich fruits such as oranges, tomatoes, grapefruit and lemon, that can cause your baby to get a nappy rash. If you think something you are eating is affecting your baby, you may need to do a bit of detective work to figure out the cause of the sensitivity. If you are not sure, try cutting the food out of your diet for up to a week to see if things improve. If avoiding the food causes a nutritional imbalance, seek professional advise before removing from your diet.

    Moderate your caffeine intake, a small amount is fine, but too much can interfere with your baby's sleep, or make him/her fussy. Keep in mind that caffeine is found in some sodas, teas, and over-the-counter medicines, as well as in coffee. Having an occasional social drink will not hurt your baby, but may make him/her sleepier than usual. To a sleep deprived mother this may sound like a solution, however it is more likely to unsettle your baby and lead to poor feeding which may result in your baby waking more during the night.


  3. If you are trying to establish breast feeding with your newborn you may want to consider not using the bottles of Similac the hospital sent home.  Those are only samples provided by the formula company in hopes of getting you to buy their product - it's a marketing strategy.  In the beginning, your baby needs to nurse frequently to build up your milk supply.  You may or may not have gotten your milk in yet, but nursing every 1-2 hours around the clock is going to be pretty standard for a few weeks.  I suggest you forget about the formula for a little while and just nurse.  The recommendations vary, but typically you can leave prepared, open formula at room temperature for around an hour.  You can also put it in the refrigerator if your baby eats little then re-heat it once before discarding.  Re-heat by placing the bottle in a cup of hot water than replace the water until the milk is the desired temperature.  An episiotomy, which is done between your vaginal opening and your anal opening is fairly normal and requires no severe restrictions on activities.  Cleaning gently and with the squirt bottle will help prevent infection.  Walking and sitting will be done with some caution, but there is no reason to stay in bed unless your doctor had given the instructions to do so.  Your mom is likely thinking back to her days of giving birth when staying in the hospital longer was common, but it has been shown to be helpful in the healing process to get up and move around.  Most of the time you can eat what you want when breast feeding.  Some women say their babies get tummy aches after they have eaten things like broccoli or cabbage.  However, I have breast fed 4 babies, the youngest 2 until they self weaned, and I never had tummy issues with my babies when I ate a particular food.  Eating healthy and drinking plenty of water are good goals.  You don't have to eliminate or restrict anything in your diet.  Just like when you were pregnant, focus on lots of veggies, some fruits, plenty of whole grains, leans meats, and low-fat milk products.  Limit sugar and fat, but you don't have to eliminate anything.  It's nice that you have your mom around to help out.  If you haven't done any searches or bought any books about infant and child care you should think about doing that.  There are many available.  What to Expect the First Year is a pretty good one as is Focus on the Family Complete Book of Baby and Child Care.  I have used both of them, but there are many more available.

  4. i was told as long as you refrigerate it then it should be fine but don't leave it out then try to feed your baby it

  5. If he drank staright from the bottle, whatever he didnt drink needs to be pitched within one hour. It builds up bacteria. If you poured it from the container into his bottle and put the rest  in the fridge it has to be used within 24 hrs. CONGRATS!!!

  6. they recommend throwing it away after an hour if it was drank out of..because of bacteria..if it was only opened then you can hold it for 24 hours in the fridge.
