my fiance and i are soon to move out out 2gether 4 the 1st time. Iv suggested having our wages put in2 our joint account and then our direct debits such as rent council tax insurance etc come from there but he insists it wouldn't make things any easier. I think its easier to keep track of things this way. There are no trust issues, he just doesn't see the logic! lol who do u think is right?

  1. hi me and my partner have our own house and we both work, we have a joint bank account and we also have an account in our own name.we find it much easier to have a joint account for our utilities bills, such as rent gas elec council tax,as we no all our bills were going out and it were so much easier that way.

but it is up 2 u how u wud want to do it good luck x

  2. is it worth fighting over?

  3. As the person who is the financial guru of the household, I feel your pain. My guy and I are buying a house together and I have complete access to ALL of his accounts, so obviously he trusts me with it. However, he still doesn't want to combine our accounts, so I, the household accountant, have the joy of balancing two peoples finances AND making sure they match each other.

However, though far more complicated, I KNOW there's a reason I'm the financial guru in the house and why he is not. I trust that his money is his and mine is mine. Until the 1st of 15th of the month comes, at which time I fill out one of his signed blank checks to reimburse myself. I can also keep up with what he alone spends on things... such as eating out for lunch at work or his tobacco addiction.

We do put most things on my credit card (which I pay off at the end of every month AND I get cash back rewards on, therefore the card company pays me!), so it's like a joint account. We also use my car whenever we can carpool to anywhere (which is just about everywhere but work). So, he reimburses me for the gas on my car. So we have a joint car account. ;)

I think for your relationship it sounds like you have the better plan. What is his explanation for why it wouldn't be any easier? If he doesn't have an explanation, the you won the argument and you get your joint account. :) Plus, being married is suppose to be a merging of everything from souls to bank accounts, so what's his point. Plus, most places I've rented from with roommates don't want 2 checks, so it would make sense that since the money only comes from one account, that the money should already be in that one account rather than trying to "bill" him for his portion. He's your fiance; not some low life roommate. haha.

Good luck! Sometimes guys just don't get these things. Keep working at it.

  4. I would advise against having a joint account until after you are married. A few years ago I was in the same situation as you and we found it easier for the bills to be in his name and I paid half of the bills into his account. It was for the best as we broke up a year later and then we didn't have the mess of taking my name of the utility bills etc.

  5. What you could do is open another account specifically to be used to pay bills. Once the wages go into your own accounts, so much from both wages can be transferred to the bills account, with all the direct debits etc coming off that one.

It may sound a bit of a hassle, but once it was all set up there shouldn't be much problem. Just as long as you have enough to cover all the bills in the bill account, with a bit over just for safety's sake.

There really is no right answers for this, though. It really boils down to how things work for you. If both of you have two different ideas, then why not try out both for, say, 6 months. You may find one way works better than the other, or even find a better way in the long run.

  6. This is what me and my boyfriend do,  think you are right, its soo much more easier beacuse you can both just pay half into an account then that is set aside for bills, then in the account you have now that can be spent on whatever. =] hope i helped xx
