Question:

First time.. should I ski or snowboard?

I'm going on a ski trip in a couple days for spring break (totally last minute for me so I've had no time to really prepare) and I was wondering which is easier (and more fun) for me to learn the first time? I'm female, 21, 5'8 and am about 190lbs. Though I am overweight, I'm not in awful physical condition. My legs are in good shape (calves more so than thighs), but I have weak arms (if that makes a difference). I plan on taking a lesson for whichever one I choose... I just don't know which one would be the best for me. Any suggestions? And any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! :)

  1. Snowboarding has a steep learning curve and you'll spend much of the first day on your butt but it'll click later that day or the next day and start to be fun and you'll progress quickly.

Skiing is easy to pick up the basics of and you'll get going faster than boarding but to get to good levels beyond basic is not too easy.

Try whichever interests you more, there isn't any reason you should ski before you board.  If you're just going for one day it might be simpler to ski but if boarding is something you think you want to pick up don't waste your time & money skiing.

(If it lends any cred to my answer I'm 24f who just started boarding a lot this season after a day here and there over the last 8 years.)

  2. ski

  3. First time ever doing snow sports?  Definitely do skiing first.  Once you get the hang of skiing, you can then start to learn how to snowboard.

  4. Snowboarding after you get the hang of it, its so much more fun

skiing is funner the first times because snowboarding takes aday or two to get the hang of but after you get the hang of it , its so much more fun

and you might be lucky and pick it up in a couple hours

  5. i'd say snowboarding :D

i tried to learn both, but i couldnt get the hang of skiing

snowboarding feels nicer aswell when you have got used to it, it will take you maybe a day to learn properly, but when you know, its deffinately worth it! and lets face it... snowboarding is cooler :P

and if you do, heres a suggestion... buy some rist protectors, they can deffinately help when you're learning. cos you do fall over quite a bit when you arent used to it

    hope i could help

  6. I suggest snowboarding.. You will take some time to learn how to ski.. I had lessons on how to snowboard, and by the middle of the day, my whole group was not  only snowboarding, but when we got back home, we all went out and purchased snowboards.. You will have to endure, some bumm smacking from falling backwards, but after that it's all good..

  7. in general, most go skiing for their first time, it will actually take longer (in most cases) to learn how to ride, skiing is a little more "natural" in it's stance....i suggest skiing for a first timer,  as a beginner you might have some trouble w/your back facing the mountain.

  8. Snowboard, it only takes half a day(with good instructors) or a day to learn.. Skiing takes too long to enjoy the sport.. You can snowboard one day, and by the next day or your next trip, your doing some nice carving..

  9. Definetely ski ..
