Question:

First time skier! Question about apparel?

I don't own any ski gear. I am able to rent my equipment, but I don't know what I can wear. I don't want to buy anything, as this is my first time and I don't know if I'll like it.

Does anyone have tips on what kind of clothing I should wear? I just have the basic winter wear....Is there a better fabric to wear?

Thanks for your input!

  1. -Tall, thick socks

-Long sleeved shirt would be nice

-any sort of pants, maybe long johns with jeans?

    Plus your outer gear:

    -Snow pants

    -Jacket!!!

    -Gloves

    -Neckwarmer?

    -hat!!

    HELMET!  those are helpful...

    Good luck!!

  2. I agree about the scotch guard. You also need to make sure you can cinch your coat sleeves, neck, and waist to keep snow from getting in.  Leg gaiters can keep the snow out of your boots and are not expensive. You need good waterproof, breathable gloves, and a cord for your sunglasses.  Skiing is so much fun, but you won't enjoy it if you are cold, wet, and miserable just because you did not have the right gear. Don't forget sunscreen for your face.

  3. you can wear sweat pants and layer clothing to stay warm.

and your basic winter gear over that!!! Wear high socks also.

  4. Jacket, snowpants, some kind of base layer like under armour, ski socks (they aren't that expensive), hat, gloves, goggles.  Just don't ski in jeans/carharts/camo and you should be alright.

  5. Some shops (either in town or at the mountain) will rent snow pants so you should look into that.  Any good jacket that's water and wind proof will work for you.  That kind of thing is sometimes rentable but it's easier to borrow if you don't own it.

Under the winter jacket and pants wear non-cotton clothing.  You want some long johns and a long sleeved shirt and then a layer (or two) for warmth.  Fleece is ideal but other materials do the job well too.

  6. buy a can of "scotch guard" it will water proof any clothing. the main thing is to stay dry. ski wear is very expensive, i would wait and see if you like it.-blurey

  7. The items you want to rent are the ski jacket and ski pants. Under your jacket wear either polypropylene or woolen thermals if you can, or polarfleece. I wear nothing under my jacket but a woolen icebreaker thermal, but you may need more than I do. Actually most warm clothing will do, but avoid cotton. You need a beanie that covers your ears. Ski gloves are essential, preferably waterproof, and these are not normally hired. Knitted woolen gloves just aren't good enough. Layers are good, as you can remove something if you get too hot. Only wear one pair of socks but they should be  long enough to come up past the top of the boot. Woolen or wool blends are best.

  8. wear your "basic winter wear" and if you have under armor wear that to and some ski socks might be a good idea
