Question:

First time snowboarding!? HELP!?

In a few hours I'll be going snowboarding tonight and all day tomorrow with my school. I've never gone snowboarding before, but I've been skiing twice (I'm okay at it). What do I need to know?

I do dance (i.e. ballet and pointe) and I play field hockey and lacrosse. Will any of these skills help me? Can you compare any snowboarding tips with anything related to these?

  1. Dress warmly.  Wear long underwear, fleece or wool pants and shirts and a fully water and wind proof outer layer.  Goggles, hat, gloves and a helmet go well with all that.

Take a lesson. The instructors are trained to teach you quickly and easily.  Without a lesson you'll not have much fun!

It's going to take a while for the lesson to make sense and start being fully useful to you so just hang out on some easy (green) runs until you're comfortable to move somewhere else.

If you think you're going to fall don't give in, fight it. A friend once told me "when in doubt ride it out." That's helped immensely.

Don't forget to take a lunch break and a snack break so that you can have a break from the slopes.  It'll help with your energy and confidence.

Just get out there and have fun! It'll all work itself out.

  2. WELL WHEN U R GOING TO FALL TRY TO FALL ON UR BUTT AND TO GET UP U LEAN FORWARD WHEN UR SNOWBOARDING BEND UR KNEES A LIL TO GET SOME SPEED

  3. Plan on falling a lot.

Don't go too slow - that was my mistake.

  4. Wear extra padding on ur butt

  5. My girlfriend dances and it gave her and advantage carving toeside for some reason, probably being on her toes all the time in point. She was able to hit toeside wayyy before heelside. You might want to try that approach.

  6. First of all the first day is not that fun. You WILL fall on your butt! Go heel side which means that your board is vertical. (or wahtever way this is going ---). Go SLow and make sure the person who is teaching you knows how to teach people. I don't think any of those sports will help!! Dress warm!! Good Luck to you!!
