First time visiting germany, what places would you recommend?

I would like to visit Germany, I havn't been for ten years since I went with my college. Can you recommend the best place to visit which has all the sites, history etc? I can speak a bit of German but I am hoping to go to college to brush it up.

As I am born in Bavaria I would say Munich is a must, but outside Munich is Augsburg a town with a great history only a 20 min train ride from Munich.  

Berlin you should see. I don't know if Hamburg should be a must because than as well Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart Nuremberg or Freiburg and Lake Constance should also be a must.

Kolln (Cologne) is ok but apart from the catherdal it's very modern. This is probably a consequence of being flattened in the war but the rebuilding hasn't been particularly attractive.

Berlin is stunning and well worth a few days. If you go there and buy a BVG Welcome Card (a city transport travel card) then you'll find that it comes with a book of attraction and restaurant discount vouchers. Work your way through that and you'll have a simple and comperhensive guide to enough attractions to keep you busy for a week.

If you have the inclination then take a trip down the Rhine from Kolln by train. Spend a night in a selection of towns on the way, such as Koblenz or Boppard.

Berlin is great this time of year; school groops and international tourists are just starting to come in, so it's not that crowded yet, compared to the summer months, which is nice if you have to flee from a rain-shower into a museum, but the weather is, if it's sunny, not hot enough to make you unwilling to move unless your destination is not the closest lake. History-wise: Gee, historic sights are basically all over Germany, so I don't know where to start. Well, alright, probably the national history museum in Berlin, come to think of it, would be a good place to start, though all the other sights in Berlin are basically to do with 20th-century history. Well, apart from the museums (egyptian museum, pergamon-museum, museum of natural history...)

Potsdam of course is great, with the Sans Souci Palast and gorgeous park.

Dresden, Weimar, Leipzig, Erfuhrt, Wartburg (+castle) are nice towns that I have been to before. Than, of course, there are all the other usual suspects: Munich, Nürnberg, Regensburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Stuttgart, Trier, Aachen, Frankfurt, Koblenz, Bingen/Geisenheim, ...

I would suggest to find out what you want to see, history wise. Are you only interested in a specific time in history, or an overview over everything? Where are you flying to and how much time will you spend in Germany? That might give you a better idea of what you actually will have time for.

I would love to see Munich again.

I would go to Berlin and visit some of the countryside of the former East Germany.

On the Polish-German border is the market town of Gorlitz. The town supposedly has the highest concentration of medieval buildings in all of Europe.

Germany has such an in credible history and you can plan dozens of trips based on different themes. Everything from a boat trip down the Rhine to visit the vineyards, going to from town to town just for the Gothic Cathedrals or you can stick with only 20th century historical sites.

Wish I could go with you.

There are a lot of interesting places - Berlin, Cologne, Heidelberg, Hamburg, Munich, the "Bodensee", Black Forret,... Sylt is also interesting, if you like nature.

Berlin and Cologne are not so conservativ like Heidelberg e.g. In Heidelberg there are so many tourists, but it is nice there. I think Berlin must be interesting - you can find cheap hotels there or one of the youth hostels and you can visit the political sides of Germany.

Start in Munich and then head west to Augsburg.  From there you can take the 'royal' road north or south.  Rothenburg o der Tauber is great. (a walled city) Augsburg has roman walls still standing.  Augsburg is over 2,000 years old.  Berchtesgaden is good.  In the heart of the German alps.

Salzburg Austria is a short trip and can be done in one day.  Take a guided tour by bus or walking.  GADS!  There is so much to see in Germany!  Have Fun!!!

That depends on your interest. Since you are still young, you may want to go to hip cities like Munich and Berlin. Dusseldorf is great for shopping and is in close proximity to many other great sites.

Take a castle tour from Cologne to Mainz on the river by boat.

You want to see medival towns, go to Marburg/Hessen or Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Trier used to be a second Rom and has lots of 2000 year old ruins.

I would rent a car and drive 140 miles on the Autobahn, its one of the biggest thrills, but your hair may get white.
