First two weeks of 2012 season and performance of NFC East – NFL Review
The National Football Conference (NFC) East is rated by many experts as the most competitive division in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season. In presence of teams like Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and, of course, the
defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants, it is hard to predict which team(s) will qualify for the playoffs from the division.
After the first two weeks, all the four teams have played two games each and the results are pretty much surprising, to say the least.
It was expected that the Eagles would give blistering performance this season, but they have not lived up to the expectations yet and are still, quite surprisingly, leading the division with two victories.
After marking a memorable start to the season by upsetting New Orleans Saints, Redskins stand at 1-1. Cowboys and Giants also share the same record.
In this space, we are going to review performance of all these teams in the first two games and focus the performance of all four quarterbacks based on the stats they have recorded so far.
Philadelphia Eagles
Eagles started their season with an away game. They visited Cleveland to face Browns, who were seemingly less threatening opponents, but managed to give tough time to the visitors.
The Browns were able to dominate Eagles on many occasions, because the latter struggled to find rhythm in the season opener. Eagles performed like an immature unit throughout the entire game, but were lucky enough to get a few scoring moves that eventually
led them to victory. Overall, their performance was below par and required many improvements.
In the Week 2 game, Eagles hosted the confident Baltimore Ravens, this time hoping to overcome their flaws on offence and defence. An improvement in some areas was nevertheless seen during the game, but Eagles once again failed to live up the expectations
and, again, surprisingly won the game.
In both the games, Eagles missed many opportunities on offence. They were often unable to make big plays, while their running and passing game also showed lack of maturity.
Nevertheless, the victories were cherished, as they must be, but Eagles are still aware of the fact that they need to improve.
Michael Vick
Vick was supposed to give an explosive performance on the offence right from the start and even before the start of the season it was assumed that the quarterback could lead the Eagles to the playoffs this time.
However, Vick has been struggling to find his touch. He has struggled badly with his accuracy in both games and although he was the one to provide the game-winning touchdown in both games, his overall performance was not very much appreciated.
In Week 1 game, Vick sent a total of 56 passes. Only 29 of them were completed as the quarterback gained 317 yards. He was also able to throw two touchdown passes, but at the same time the quarterback sent four interceptions, which is a humiliating sign
for a player of Vick’s stature.
Hoping to improve in the second game, Vick did manage to slightly improve his accuracy, but was again unable to live up to his reputation. He threw a total of 32 passes out of which 23 were completed. Vick gained 371 yards and sent one touchdown pass. His
number of interceptions was two. Again, unimpressive.
In Week 3 game, Eagles are going to take on Arizona Cardinals and if they are unable to improve their game they might not get support from their good fortune for long.
To be continued...
