First two weeks of 2012 season and performance of NFC East – NFL Review (Part II)
Continued from part I...
Dallas Cowboys
Cowboys signalled their deadly intentions right from the start when they defeated the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants in the season opener on the latter’s home field.
Their Week 1 game was pretty impressive as the Cowboys were able to completely dominate the hosts. They showed much better performance on offence as compared to the games they had played against the Giants last season.
Also, the defence complemented the offence nicely as the Giants failed to make many significant moves. Cowboys took some time to settle in the game, but once they started going, the Giants just could not stop them.
After such a brilliant victory, it was assumed that Cowboys would give tough time to Seattle Seahawks as well in their Week 2 game.
Seahawks had not made a very strong start to the season and Cowboys’ victory over Giants had given them an edge over Seahawks.
Cowboys travelled to play Seahawks, who were better prepared to face the visitors than Giants and the result of the game said it all.
The visitors struggled badly on offence, allowing the opponents to dominate them. The Cowboys were unable to create many scoring opportunities and were not able to reach even near the end zone on most of their playing drives.
Their loss against Seahawks snatched an opportunity from them to lead the division and now they are standing behind the Eagles, who have two wins.
Tony Romo
Romo had to work hard and play a major role in the team from the start of the season and he did exactly the same, in the first game at least.
Against Giants, Romo was marvellous. Romo threw a total of 29 passes during the game and was able to find receivers 22 times. The quarterback gained 307 yards and also sent three touchdown passes. The Cowboys’ quarterback only threw one interception.
Romo was able to display his heroics right from the start against the Giants to lead the team to the victory. However, he was unable to replicate his performance when his team faced Seahawks.
The game against Seahawks was special for Romo as well. A few seasons earlier, he had lost an opportunity during a playoff game that could have given Cowboys a victory. Instead, Romo’s failure sent the Cowboys packing.
So it was also expected that Romo, backed by good performance against Giants in the season opener, would avenge his previous failure, but he could not do so and the Seahawks were able to win the game.
Romo threw a total of 40 passes against Seahawks and was able to complete only 23 of them. The decline in accuracy as compared to the first game is evident. Romo managed to gain 251 yards against Seahawks and got only one touchdown. He also sent an interception during the game in which the Cowboys only scored seven points.
Romo was certainly better than Michael Vick in the first two games, but Vick’s Eagles are leading the division with two victories and Cowboys are behind.
Cowboys have not played any home game yet in the season. In Week 3 game, they will host Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hoping to gain advantage over other teams in the division.
