  1. maria barbella 1895 also the first woman to die by the electric chair

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velma_Barfi...

    Her name was Emma Barfield.

  3. EDIT: I've also found another link which records details of women executed since the 1700s, along with one that lists all women executed as far as is known from the 1600s. See final two links. What a sad litany it is :-(

    ~*~*~*~

The first woman "officially" executed in the US was Mary Surratt, but she was held in custody in a house, not a prison, so that may not count.

Looking back through Federal execution statistics, it looks like Ethel Rosenberg may have been the first woman executed since 1927 under federal law. She was executed in 1953.

In 1954, Bonnie Heady was executed, federally. Both Heady and Rosenberg were co-defendants, who committed their crimes with a male partner.

OK, found this list which lists Dora Wright as hanging in 1903 in Oklahoma.

The final link is to a blog about True Crime in which the case of Dora Wright (convicted for murdering a child) is outlined.

    Very interesting question.

BTW ~ I am not in favour of capital punishment.

    Cheers :-)
