First-year owner Shahid Khan sees Jacksonville Jaguars on brink of worst ever season – NFL News
The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the brink of ending the current season on the historical low of 2-14 points since inaugural of the team in 1995.
Last time it was coach Tom Coughlin’s reign under which the team finished a season at the worst record of 4-12 points, and if they do not win the remaining two games of this season, they will end on the worst ever note of 2-14.
It is going to be very disappointing first year for owner Shahid Khan. Although Khan has pledged to exercise patience as far as the team’s performance and rebuilding are concerned, the job of general manager Gene Smith is seen certainly on the line.
Smith has been at the forefront of the team’s decision-making on selection and hiring of their staff and players for last four years. His record is 22-40, and all fingers are being pointed at him directly as the first causality. He could have been a past
for the Jags last year, but apparently outgoing owner Wayne Weaver had sought an assurance from Khan to let Smith continue for a year at least.
Smith has managed to retain a number of assistant coaches from the previous regime, hired new head coach Mike Mularkey and has been advising the new owner on all the team’s affairs.
First-year coach Mike Mularkey’s job also appears to be at stake. There is hardly any chance for him to extend his tenure in Jacksonville if they go on to lose the remaining two games of the season.
He said of the situation:
"Like I said to the players, if you do everything the right way and you do it the best you can, you'll be successful here and wherever else that will be. That's the only thing I will go by or anybody else that's going to be in this building is going to go
by. We're going to just do the best we can."
The situation is going to be clear to all the officials and players after two weeks when the regular season comes to its end.
